What is the process that you follow? The process is quite simple. After you send an enquiry, I will send an email to you and ask you for a convenient time to have a telecon. During this telecon, I will ask all the questions that I have about the project. These would include questions on type of work, volume of work, deadlines, samples, etc. You can even send all these details through email. Once I have understood the scope I will prepare a formal estimate of cost and time and email it to you. I accept 50% to 100% payment in advance, so once you make the payment, I will commence the project and complete it within the promised timeframe. You pay the rest of the amount at this stage. There can be two or three rounds of reviews and the content gets finalized. Can we meet? We need to have a face-to-face round before we proceed? Personally, I feel that everything could be easily discussed over the phone. I have quite a few foreign clients, who have never even talked to me, but get all the work done on time and to their satisfaction by communicating only through emails and occasional online chats. The other reason why I avoid meetings is that most of the time, (and I say this based on years of experience) the person I am meeting with, is not prepared. In such meetings I ask the questions and the other side just gives me remarks like – “yes, we will get that”, “we will collate that info and send it to you”, “we’ll need to discuss this point internally before we give you a final verdict,” and so on. The result: I waste precious time and money to go for the meeting, and get nothing back with me. I could’ve asked all those questions over the phone too. And, being in India I have also faced a lot of delays before the meeting actually starts. Can you interact with our subject matter experts to get all the details? Yes, I can, preferably over the phone. It would be great if you can please send all the preliminary info before the telecon, so that I can study and prepare myself. I also have a set of information collection questionnaires on all kind of topics. These are comprehensive questionnaires on corporate profile, case study, press release, website, webpage, proposal, brochure, preliminary info, and so on. Your experts can simply answer those questions or give links to relevant sites/documents and I will get most of the info I need from you to start working. Why do you insist on 50% advance? Can we pay you the complete amount once the project is over? I take post payment only if the amount is small and that too from the clients I have already worked with in the past. For any new client based in Bangalore, I accept 50% advance payment and for clients outside Bangalore, I take 100% advance before commencing the work. The reason is not that I don’t trust the clients or the quality of my work. It is because many times projects drag-on for days; even simple case studies await review and don’t get finalized. Clients who wanted their website up in one week keep contemplating for months. Result: I don’t get paid even when I have done my share of work. Can you start the work now; we will pay you later? Our finance team is a bit slow. Yes, if I have time I can start the work, but I will deliver the content only after receiving the payment. I am running a business too – I prioritize work based on clients who pay first. Can you give us a per word rate? Calculating writing efforts based on number of words is highly unfair. I feel that it degrades the quality of the content. According to me writing less requires maximum efforts – so there’s no point of paying based on words. When I write, I keep one document or page in mind (and not each word). The content should make sense as a whole. For instance, if I make an illustration that has 10 words; would it be fair to get paid for those 10 words only? A lot more effort goes into making a 10-word illustration than to write 300 words on the same subject. There are exceptions though. I can surely fix the upper or lower limit of content in number of words after discussing with the client. I can also give a per word rate for editing and proofreading jobs. Some pages of our website contain very little content. Would you charge at the same rate for those pages? The question is fair, but some pages of your website have more content too. Well, if there are only one or two pages that have lesser content then the cost remains the same, but if there are many pages that have less content, then I can give you a discounted rate for such pages. We wanted the content yesterday actually. Can you write for us ASAP? It’s great that you finally realized the need for professionally written content. But sorry, I will give you content on dates that I decide. I have to manage work so that there’s some progress for all my clients. I find it amazing when some people call me and tell me that they want to build an online presence, but they want to do it within a week. “The design is ready but content is not there.” Please understand that writing takes time and good writing takes even more. It involves research, finding out how competitors have written about the same stuff, creating a storyboard and then comes the part of writing original content. Do you also design websites and marketing collateral? No, I do not design websites, but I do give you a layout for your marketing collateral. For instance, if I am working on brochure content, I will make the layout of the way I want my content to be. I use MS Word or PowerPoint to do this and then convert it into a PDF. This PDF could be used directly as e-brochure, but cannot be printed as for that you would need hi-resolution layouts. In this layout I use the brand colors and logos, put the right pictures (which you have to buy if you want to use it for commercial purpose), highlight headlines, create illustrations, put the important point in boxes, and so on. This helps you in actually visualizing how your brochure can look like. You may get it redesigned through your designer. Can you train our in-house team on basics of English language? Yes, I can. In fact, I used to take content quiz sessions in which I explained the basics of any one language concept and then asked questions so that the audience can understand it clearly. Some topics covered were: sentence formation, subject-verb agreement, use of apostrophe, avoiding negative sentences, positive writing style, writing business emails, creating powerful presentations, asking right questions, and many more. These sessions are especially helpful for technical teams who cannot devote much time to enhance their English language skills.
